The Longest Goodbye

How do you say goodbye to your best friend? How do you finally make the decision that she has suffered too much and the best thing you can do for her is to let her go? Why is having a pet the best and worst thing about life? How can something that has brought you so much joy bring you so much pain? A pet is a gift, another creature that comes into you life that you think you are going to take care of, but in the end they end up taking care of you. Greeting us as soon as we walk in the door, sleeping next to us, making sure that we are always happy. I have never known a truer saying than it is better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all. Every time I had that said it was in the context of romantic love, but I have never experienced a love more pure than the love that I’ve had for a pet and the love that they’ve had for me. I’ve also never experienced a pain more sever than the pain of taking a dog into the vet one last time. But if all the pain that I have experienced when losing a pet means that they’ve felt loved their entire life, I would gladly endure it. Because I know that if the tables were turned, they would do the same for me.
